If you describe the Ariel Atom to someone, they'll think it's just a car. And why wouldn't they? It has nearly all the components that make up a car. Four wheels, brakes, seats, windshield, engine, transmission, headlights, etc. It's all there.
But it doesn't have doors. Or a roof. And calling that exoskeleton a 'body' is more poetic license than anything else. It has side panels made of plexiglass, presumably to keep rocks from pelting you as you're traveling at mach one. That's because the design brief for the Atom was to build a modern interpretation of the classic Lotus Seven, so a car that is as bare bones as possible with performance that will beat up on cars that cost 10 times as much.
And while that original Lotus Seven was a standout in the corners, it was not close to fast in a straight line. The Atom changes that. This is the 3S, which is powered by the K24 engine from the Honda Civic Si, but with one minor change.
That change is turbocharging.
This is a car that revs out to 7,800 RPM with VTEC and turbos. Turbos that push power to a ridiculous 365 in a car that weighs just 1,300 pounds.
